Small Story Big Impact (SSBI) is an incubator programme to boost the creation of factual content and documentaries of nature, environment, culture, heritage and people.

The programme aims to develop talents and encourage content creators to engage with their surroundings and capture the many untold stories around their community.

Each year, around 8 – 10 selected filmmakers will receive a grant and mentorship to produce a short documentary according to aspecific chosen theme.

All SSBI documentaries will be premiered and judged at theannual Walk The Doc Festival and one documentary will be awarded SSBI Outstanding Documentary.

The roadshow will travel to six locations covering four states e.g. KL/Selangor, Pahang and Pulau Pinang, giving opportunities for content creators to learn and connect with other creatives as well as industry professionals.

The roadshow programme will take place over a two-day period in each location.

First Day:
Masterclasses, Workshop, Documentary Screenings, Q&A Session
Second Day:
Story Pitching Session for Mentorship Programme (pre-registered)

MEntorship Programme

The Mentorship Programme is open to all content creators. Participants only need to register and pitch their story to be selected. Selected participants will receive RM 5000 funding and 1.5 months to complete their micro-documentary. They will also need to attend a 3-day Documentary Production Workshop in Kuala Lumpur.

The best documentary will receive ‘Outstanding Video Award’ at Walk The Doc International Documentary Festival 2023 in Langkawi from 1 – 3 August 2023. All completed micro-documentaries will also be screened at the festival and aired on Walkabout Asia.

STORIES
WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Story theme is Kuala Lumpur Old Charm
  • Proposed documentaries MUST be from the downtown Kuala Lumpur area
  • Stories can be from the subject of Cultural Diversity, Heritage Monuments, Traditional Trades and Community, Historical Architecture, Nature & Biodiversity
  • Special preference will be given for stories within the Merdeka 118 precint eg stories of Stadium Merdeka, Stadium Negara
  • Duration of story is 5 – 7 minutes

SELECTION

  • Interested participants will have to submit their proposed documentary stories through www.smallstorybigimpact
  • Shortlisted 16 documentary proposals will be chosen to attend 3 day Mentorship Programme in Kuala Lumpur
  • During the Mentorship Programme, filmmakers will be mentored and guided to polish their documentary stories
  • From the 16 shortlisted proposals, 8 documentary stories will be chosen to receive RM 5,000 grant and 1.5 month to produce the documentary
  • Duration of documentary is 5 – 7 minutes
  • All documentaries will be premiered at the 3rd Walk The Doc Festival, this 19 – 21 November 2024 in Kuala Lumpur
  • Best documentary will receive the SSBI Outstanding Documentary Award
  • All completed micro-documentaries will also be aired on all Walkabout Asia platforms and participating Media Partner

CRITERIA

  • Open to participants 18 years and above
  • Basic knowledge in videography and editing
  • Able to complete the documentary in 1.5 months
  • Able to work independently and collaborate with other participants and local community 
  • Must attend the Mentorship Programme
  • Documentary produced must be of new work

MEDIA WITH A PURPOSE
A Masterclass with Chris Scheuler

Chris Schueler, an Emmy® Award-winning producer, will share his vast experience in developing and producing projects that have captivated audiences worldwide and sparked social change.

A journey into the heart of impactful storytelling with real life examples from around the world, teaching participants how to weave narratives that resonate deeply with the audience and inspire action.

A unique model melding video production, creativity and business; the class covers how to produce/direct documentary productions on a tight budget, fund projects in innovative/ unique ways and use social change theory to make a difference.
